9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Image
Summary/Findings After conducting five more interviews, I was able to gain a greater sense for what's inside and outside of my opportunity's boundary. I very carefully selected my interview candidates, because I wanted to make sure that they were individuals that should have the unmet need, but didn't. My findings for the inside of the boundary didn't surprise me. In fact, the results were in line with my expectations. The inside mainly revolved around students who exercise at UF that desire more options when it comes to the areas they can workout at. Where the interviews played a huge role in developing meaningful findings was for the outside portion of the boundary. Outside of the boundary was something that I previously never considered before on my own, so it was very valuable to have other people help develop my thoughts on it. While the lack of gym space problem seems like a huge deal to the exercising community at the school, there's a very large number...

8A – Solving The Problem

My selected opportunity was the lack of gym space at the University of Florida. I'm excited to have the opportunity to write about potential solutions to this problem. 1. Build more gym space One of my friends works at Southwest Recreation Center, the main gym at this school. One of the things he told me was that out of all of the SEC schools, UF ranks last in the weight room space that it has available to its students, by a large margin. To me, this is unacceptable. The school should build another gym - by allowing the students to be split up between two primary locations instead of just one, the weight room would be a much more efficient and enjoyable experience. 2. Redesign the current interior layout of Southwest Recreation Center As it currently stands, Southwest Recreation Center is a huge, impressive building, but for some reason, it only has a small area dedicated to weights in the very back of the building. To me, this is the least efficient allocation of space pos...

7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

The opportunity that I've identified that I'd like to pursue: The who: Gym space at the University of Florida The what: Over-crowded weight room at virtually any time of the day The why: Lack of square footage of gym space relative to the number of students at this University Interview 1 - Mike:  Testing the who: Mike thought I isolated the who well. Testing the what: Mike thought gym space was only crowded specifically at the Southwest Recreation Center. He also added that the free weight areas are usually more crowded than others Testing the why: Mike questioned if the why was more so attributable to the lack of square footage or the physical locations of the current gyms Interview 2 - Mosi:  Testing the who: Mosi agreed that the who was the gym space Testing the what: Mosi thought that the weight room wasn't always crowded. He expressed that he thought that it was usually crowded around 5pm, and less crowded earlier or later in the day. Testing the why: M...

6A – Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Opportunities in economic trends 1. Home building in the United States has reached its highest levels since June 2007. I found this opportunity/economic trend in the Wall street Journal. I believe this information presents an opportunity as there somehow has to either be an increase in supply or building efficiency to meet this higher construction demand. The prototypical customer would be real estate developers. I think this opportunity might be difficult to exploit as the real estate development business has high barriers to entry.  I saw this opportunity because I believe the housing market will continue to be successful going forward, whereas some people thing an economic recession is coming soon.  2. This past summer, job openings slowed as the labor market cooled down. I found this opportunity in the Wall Street Journal. An opportunity exists as a slowing labor market means theres a growing supply of labor. The customer is labor employers. The opportunity coul...

5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

For the local newspaper requirement I selected TCPalm. I selected this paper because it covers my hometown and some of its surrounding areas. Title: Golf cart, sedan crash on A1A leaves man critically injured, flown to hospital  https://www.tcpalm.com/story/news/local/indian-river-county/2019/09/10/golf-cart-and-car-crash-a-1-a-man-flown-hospital-critical-condition/2276433001/ Description of the story: A crash occurred between a golf cart and a car, leaving the golf cart driver in critical condition. The driver's injuries were severe enough to warrant being flown to the local hospital via helicopter. The road that the crash occurred on was temporarily closed down until the debris was cleared. Description of the problem presented: The limited safety of golf cars due to the lack of safety features that they offer. Description of who has the problem: People that either own and/or regularly use golf carts Title: Greasy pizza boxes, plastic bags hurting Treasure Coast recycling...

4A – Forming An Opportunity Belief

Beginning point  I believe there is an opportunity for more gym space at the University of Florida Describe your belief The unmet need at this university is excess weight room space. Students at this university have this unmet need, as they experience long lines and crowded spaces whenever they use the limited weight room space available. The need has come from a combination of a growing student population and a fixed amount of weight room space. In an attempt to meet this need now, students are trying to go to the gym during times of the day where its least crowded, at the expense of having the freedom to go whenever they want. I am 95% sure that the opportunity for more weight room space exists. In order to identify prototypical customers, I surveyed individuals who were at University of Florida's Southwest Recreation Center. Iteration (Customer) No. 1 Answers to Questions: The first customer said that the exact nature of the need is simply for more gym space. They said ...

3A - Your Entrepreneurship Story

Image
Exposure to Entrepreneurship One time where I was exposed to entrepreneurship was when one of my fraternity brothers started his own clothing company. The clothing company makes t-shirts that are made for the gym. My fraternity brother started this business because he wanted to raise money to help pay for one of his friend's medical bills. As far as finding a legitimate way to raise money went, this was a great idea on his part, as there's a large amount of students at the school that exercise and are willing to purchase more gear. I was able to observe the process my fraternity brother went through to get the business up and running. This gave me a very basic understanding of what it takes to start a business and the time that's required.  Below is an image of the different t-shirts that the company offers.  Why I enrolled in ENT3003 My fraternity brother's initiative to start his own company sparked my interest in entrepreneurship. While I was a...
