7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

The opportunity that I've identified that I'd like to pursue:

The who: Gym space at the University of Florida
The what: Over-crowded weight room at virtually any time of the day
The why: Lack of square footage of gym space relative to the number of students at this University

Interview 1 - Mike:

Testing the who: Mike thought I isolated the who well.
Testing the what: Mike thought gym space was only crowded specifically at the Southwest Recreation Center. He also added that the free weight areas are usually more crowded than others
Testing the why: Mike questioned if the why was more so attributable to the lack of square footage or the physical locations of the current gyms

Interview 2 - Mosi:

Testing the who: Mosi agreed that the who was the gym space
Testing the what: Mosi thought that the weight room wasn't always crowded. He expressed that he thought that it was usually crowded around 5pm, and less crowded earlier or later in the day.
Testing the why: Mosi didn't attribute the why to purely square footage - he thought that current building that the gym is in is large enough to handle the student population. However, he thought the interior of the current building is incredibly inefficiently organized and that it wastes a ton of space.

Interview 3 - Chris:

Testing the who: Chris thought that the who was the students who use the gym
Testing the what: Chris thought that the what could be a disproportionately large population of students at this school who routinely workout
Testing the why: Chris thought that the amount of kids that workout at this school could be related to the prevailing culture found here.

Interview 4 - Nick:

Testing the who: Nick agreed that the who was the gym space
Testing the what: Nick agreed with my assessment of the what being the crowded nature of the available spaces.
Testing the why: Nick firmly agreed with the idea that why was the lack of space available to students.

Interview 5 - Tony:

Testing the who: Tony thought about what the who could be for a while but ultimately agreed upon it being the gym space
Testing the what: Tony thought that the what could be the hours people typically choose to go to the gym
Testing the why: Tony thought that they why could be a lack of resources dedicated to remotely notifying students of how busy or empty the gym is.

Summary:
I thought the interviewing process was a very valuable experience. It was crazy to see how much value could be added to my hypothesis from just five people. While I still believe in the core of my hypothesis, it was great to see what other peoples' thoughts were, and hear other noteworthy ideas and contributions that I wouldn't of thought of myself.

  1. Hey Michael,
I really liked the opportunity you chose here since it is something that most students at the university have dealt with before. There is most definitely a lack of gym space here and finding the perfect time to go to the gym is not easy. I also appreciate how organized and well laid out your assignment is making it very easy to read.

  2. Hey Michael,
I think your first opportunity is a very great one, because it's one I deal with on almost a daily basis. The lack of gym space at Southwest makes it virtually impossible to get a good workout during the busy hours, and its caused me to adjust my entire schedule to make sure I go to the gym during the morning hours. A solution to this problem would be very helpful not only to me, but to many students on campus.
