9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Summary/Findings

After conducting five more interviews, I was able to gain a greater sense for what's inside and outside of my opportunity's boundary. I very carefully selected my interview candidates, because I wanted to make sure that they were individuals that should have the unmet need, but didn't.

My findings for the inside of the boundary didn't surprise me. In fact, the results were in line with my expectations. The inside mainly revolved around students who exercise at UF that desire more options when it comes to the areas they can workout at.

Where the interviews played a huge role in developing meaningful findings was for the outside portion of the boundary. Outside of the boundary was something that I previously never considered before on my own, so it was very valuable to have other people help develop my thoughts on it. While the lack of gym space problem seems like a huge deal to the exercising community at the school, there's a very large number of non-exercising students who have never even considered it before as they've never encountered it. I would be curious to validate if the exercising population of students at the school is in the minority or not. I also found that the need is not reorganizing currently available spaces.

  1. Hey Michael!
I think it’d be really interesting to find out the portion of students that exercise at UF versus those that don’t, as well as considering that some exercising students may use off-campus workout facilities that don’t encounter the same issue. Your specific mention of how just simply a reorganization of current gym space will not solve the issue is important because though it could be a simpler solution, capacity issues can’t be fixed without a bigger space.

  2. Hey Michael,
The fact that the interviews were in line with your thoughts shows that this is clearly an opportunity and subject you understand. Additionally, I think the interviews showing who is outside of the opportunity is important. While this is an issue many students deal with, there are also a lot of students who don't exercise and it's important to take them into account as well.

  3. Hey Michael,
I really like the opportunity you identified and enjoyed reading about your interviews. It was interesting to see that many people actually did not have the unmet need even though we would think that they did. The amount of gym space we have here at the university is definitely a problem I can identify with, and it is very eye-opening to see that many people do not have this same problem.
